A teacup is a cup for drinking tea. It may have a handle, usually a small one, which can be grasped by the thumb and one or two fingers. It is usually made of ceramic material. It is usually part of a tableware set that consists of a cup and a matching tea tray or a trio that includes a cupcake or sandwich plate. These in turn may be part of a tea set that is combined with a teapot, creamer, covered sugar bowl and slop bowl. Tea cups are usually wider and shorter than coffee cups. The cups for morning tea are usually larger than the cups for afternoon tea.

The better teacups were usually fine white translucent porcelain and decorated with patterns that might accompany a large number of dinner services. Some collectors have purchased many one-of-a-kind teacups and matching tea trays. Such decorative cabinet cups may be a memento of a place, person or event. Such collectors may also accumulate silver teaspoons with a similar theme with decorative enamel inserted in the handle.
