What is embroidery?
Embroidery, known as needlework in ancient times, is a craft in which a design is embroidered on a textile with an embroidery needle, using coloured threads to create a pattern. In ancient times, it was called "embroidery" or "needlework". As embroidery was mostly done by women, it was an important part of the "women's red". Embroidery is one of the oldest handicraft techniques in China, and has been practised for over 2000 years. According to the Shangshu, as far back as 4,000 years ago, the system of the chapter of clothing stipulated that "the clothes were painted and the dresses were embroidered". In the Zhou Dynasty, there is a record of "embroidery and multi-colour work". Embroideries from the Warring States and the two Han dynasties, unearthed in Hubei and Hunan, are of a very high standard. During the Tang and Song dynasties, embroidery was used for painting and calligraphy and for decorative objects. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the court embroiderers were very large, and folk embroidery was further developed, producing Su embroidery, Guangdong embroidery, Long embroidery, Xiang embroidery and Shu embroidery, known as the "Five Great Embroideries".
In addition, Gu embroidery, Jing embroidery, Ou embroidery, Lu embroidery, Min embroidery, Bian embroidery, Han embroidery, hemp embroidery and Miao embroidery were also produced.
